Primary school gets green light to open in September following years of delays

Parklands Educate Together Primary School, in Locking Parklands, has received official confirmation from the Department for Education to open in time for the next academic year.

It will initially open with 60 spaces for nursery pupils in a temporary building, with the permanent school venue to be completed by September 2019.

The school, which will be built between Larkhill Road and Russell Road, will have capacity for 420 pupils once fully opened and occupied.

Headteacher Steve Davis said: “This is great news. Parents offered a place at the school can accept with confidence. All the hard work over the past few years will finally come to fruition."

“We are very excited to meet our new pupils and families, and begin building our school community.”

Outline planning permission for the school, which is part of the Educate Together Academy Trust was awarded in May 2013. But the scheme has been beset by delays due to slow progress on the north-south spine road which will run through Locking Parklands, linking West Wick to the Weston Village developments. Without the road, developers could not access the school site.

However last year North Somerset Council agreed to spend about £8.8million to ensure the school project is finished by 2019.

The school’s facilities will include a changing block, sports and play spaces including a 3G football pitch, and cycle and scooter shelters. The development will also provide 35 car parking spaces.

The project’s design and access statement says: “The school and nursery will provide pupil places to the occupants of the 1,450 new homes as well as for existing residents in the surrounding area.

“The school will be strongly committed to promoting community cohesion in the wider communities it serves, bringing together both the new and established communities in the immediate area.”

Mr Davis and his team will meet with parents during a drop-in session from 2-3pm today (Thursday) at The Baby Company in West Street, Banwell.

Applications open for Locking Parklands Pre-school

Its permanent building will then open between Larkhill Road and Russell Road in September 2019.

Headteacher Steve Davis said: “We are really excited at the fantastic opportunities for shared learning that opening the preschool will bring.

“We are keen to engage with our local community and the preschool allows us to meet families earlier in their child’s education.”

The preschool will open from 8.45am-3.15pm every day during term time.

The school will have capacity for 420 pupils once fully opened.
